Modern Foreign Languages

Vision for Modern Foreign Languages

At All Saints, we believe that learning a language prepares pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly carried out in languages other than English. The learning of a language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for the pupils, where they develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how the language works and explore differences and similarities between the target language and English. Learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world, and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. As pupils begin to understand and appreciate different cultures, people and communities, they too begin to think of themselves as citizens of the world as well as of the United Kingdom. Moreover, the learning of a language provides a medium for cross-curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.

Subject Priorities

Conversational French – this approach is to make sure the language is accessible and relevant; it is important for the language to be spoken regularly. Weekly opportunities for all pupils to engage in a second language is essential for growth and understanding, as well as for the language to become embedded in the child’s learning journey. Overtime, this will build their confidence, fluency, finding ways of communicating what they want to say and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. Prioritising conversational French will be a key focus for the curriculum as it will allow each child to develop a practical awareness and understanding of the language.

Half termly focus – this will allow the children to be immersed in the language and enable them to build on a broad range of vocabulary. In addition, it will allow them to discover and develop an appreciation of the language.

Staff CPD Confidence –to provide staff at All Saints with high quality training to improve confidence and subject knowledge.

What’s New?

Every classroom will have visible and relevant posters relating to contemporary French dialogue.

Students will be introduced to the news of the week in the target language. This will challenge the students and develop their critical thinking. They will also have the opportunity to become aware of what is happening in the world, reading about key events, people or problems.
